On sale now with customer deliveries starting in November, MG HS becomes the fourth car in MG’s range alongside the MG3 hatchback, MG ZS compact SUV and the all-electric MG ZS EV. MG HS is backed by MG’s famous 7-year warranty, which is now standard across the MG range, highlighting real confidence in the build quality and providing customers with complete peace of mind.
Quality Throughout – Design and Equipment
MG HS carries a bold, powerful and agile design language. With impressive detailing and accents that customers would normally expect to find in much more expensive cars, the extraordinary design is testament to MG’s commitment to delivering high quality cars at down-to- earth prices.
Beginning at the front of the car, MG HS bears the latest iteration of MG’s stellar field grille emblazoned with the unmistakable octagonal MG badge. Typical of the new wave of MG models, this design offers a familiar face and presents a look consistent with the MG ZS, MG ZS EV and MG3.
Flowing lines across the side and to the rear create a sense of movement and momentum, while neatly framing features such as the windows and wheel arches. Chrome highlights are dispersed across the car, from the front grille and roof rails to the door handles and sill. The large 18” aluminium alloy wheels, too, provide a point of contrast and a bold statement on the road. The sleek design masks its spacious, SUV build and the large front and rear doors provide easy access for all the family, young or old.
The bright LED headlights and rear lights both feature sequential indicators on Exclusive versions. As well as providing sleek and stylish accents at each corner of the car, the headlights offer enhanced visibility for clearer and safer turning.
Measuring 4,574mm in length, 1,876mm in width and 1,664mm in height, MG HS is a large and fully-fledged SUV, providing customers not only with an impressive amount of space and comfort, but also a raised driving position to sit head and shoulders above the rest. MG HS is presented in Arctic White as standard, with a series of rich and bold metallic colours, including Black Pearl, White Pearl, and Holborn Blue, and our tri-coat paint, Dynamic Red.
Inside MG HS, drivers and passengers are presented with a spacious interior, with a variety of soft-touch and pleasingly tactile materials, contrasting colours and metallic accents. Top spec Exclusive versions have a choice of a black leather or a red and black leather interior scheme. Ambient lighting also runs throughout the interior on Exclusive versions, creating a warm and inviting social space.
The spectacular panoramic opening Skyroof, which first debuted in MG ZS EV, makes its way into the new flagship MG model, flooding the cabin with light and creating the feeling of a brighter, more expansive atmosphere throughout the car. The Exclusive DCT version features paddle shifters behind the leather-clad steering wheel, providing smooth and effortless gear changes.
Technology and connectivity are at the heart of MG HS, with a large infotainment screen situated front-and-centre of the dashboard. Featuring a bold 10.1” colour touchscreen, the system is compatible with both Apple CarPlayTM and Android AutoTM for ultimate comfort, connectivity and seamless integration with your phone, apps and music. A six-speaker sound system (four-speaker system in Explore and Excite trims) provides drivers and passengers with a rich audio experience.
Owners that opt for the range-topping Exclusive trim will benefit from the exceptional comfort and luxury of leather seats, including heated and electrically operated one-piece sports seats in the front.
The overall interior and exterior design of MG HS reflects the efforts, passion and creativity of the brand’s Advanced Design Studio in central London. The team has succeeded in developing a stylish and high quality SUV which is accessible to all.
MG Pilot – High-tech Driver Assistance
MG HS is the second MG model to benefit from the brand’s high-tech driver assistance suite called MG Pilot, after it debuted on MG ZS EV in July 2019. MG Pilot comes as standard across all versions from Explore through to Excite and Exclusive, and helps to make the driving experience relaxing and safe.
Firstly, MG Pilot includes Autonomous Emergency Braking. At speeds below 12mph, the car will automatically deploy the vehicle’s brakes to avoid a collision with a car, bicycle or pedestrian. At speeds above 12mph, the vehicle will brake automatically to reduce the likelihood or mitigate the severity of any impact.
Using an intelligent combination of forward-facing radar and camera technology, MG Pilot is an excellent companion on long distance, mile-munching journeys. Lane Keep Assist will automatically intervene if it detects the car leaving lane or leaving the carriageway, providing steering input to ensure the vehicle remains on the road. Blind spot detection provides a visual warning to the driver of any nearby vehicles in adjoining lanes.
MG HS DCT customers will benefit from a relaxed driving experience thanks to MG Pilot’s Adaptive Cruise Control. By setting the target speed and following distance, the driver instructs MG Pilot to automatically adjust the car’s speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. If the road clears, MG Pilot will accelerate to and maintain the set speed. When the Adaptive Cruise Control is active, the Integrated Cruise Assist, at speeds above 38mph, will maintain the vehicle’s position in the lane with minimum steering input from the driver. Intelligent Speed Limit Assist will read speed limit signs and will display the current speed limit to the driver.
On the DCT version, MG Pilot also includes Traffic Jam Assist, which enables the car to automatically follow the car in front at speeds below 35 mph, automatically steering, braking and accelerating within the same lane. If the vehicle in front comes to a complete stop, so will MG HS, and if it moves away within a short period of time, MG HS will do the same.
Alongside MG Pilot’s active systems, a selection of warning and alert features complement the driver, maintaining safety and simplifying everyday driving. Fitted as standard with Forward Collision.
Warning, MG Pilot’s frontal radars will trigger a warning message if the preceding vehicle decelerates rapidly, allowing enough time for a successful emergency brake application.
Drivers can be safe in the knowledge that they have excellent visibility with the advantage of Blind Spot Detection and Lane Change Assist systems. Monitoring the area behind the car’s C-pillars, the Blind Spot Detection system will alert the driver, through an A-pillar mounted warning light, if the unseen area is occupied by another car. Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Door Opening Warning also help to mitigate the risk of collisions.
Refined Power – Engine and Transmission
MG HS comes as standard with a 162PS, four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, delivering a maximum torque figure of 250Nm driven through the front wheels.
As suited to the motorway cruise as it is around town, MG HS will hit 0-60 miles per hour in 9.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 118mph. Customers have the choice of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DCT gearbox, which can also be manually controlled using the steering- wheel-mounted paddles (Exclusive versions). Whether it’s the school run, a day in the country or a long run to visit friends or family, MG HS feels competent and confident in all environments.
Efficiency is a key consideration for any new car and MG HS is no exception. A combined WLTP figure of 37.9 mpg for the manual and 36.6 mpg for the DCT returns more than 400 miles to a tank, ensuring fill ups are few and far between.
Boasting a maximum towing weight of 1,750kg, MG HS will stand up to even the most active lifestyles, pulling trailers, caravans, or boats with ease. With maximum torque available from 1,500- 4,400rpm, MG HS has the low-down strength needed to tow items with ease, even on an incline.
Exclusive DCT versions also feature a series of drive modes including Eco, Normal, Sport and a driver customisable option. A steering wheel mounted ‘Super Sport’ button allows the driver to quickly engage Sport mode and it also illuminates the interior’s red ambient lighting.
MG’s Famous 7 Year Warranty – Warranty and Dealerships
MG is pleased to offer MG HS with its famous 7-year warranty. The generous package gives customers complete peace of mind, guaranteeing that fully trained MG technicians will always be on hand with genuine replacement MG parts. Drivers can be confident that the long manufacturer warranty reflects the high build quality and world-class components used in all MG cars.

A full digital service record of checks and maintenance provides the customer with complete transparency and full access to the service history of their vehicle ”
A CLOSER IN DEPTH LOOK AT THE DETAILS
ALL UK bound MG HS variants are manufactured and assembled at the SAIC NINGDE plant located in the Fujian Province of China, along with many other variants for the rest of the world including Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
By April 20-18, SAIC Motor had established complete vehicle production bases in Shenyang, Yantai, Qingdao, Yangzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi, Shanghai, Ningbo, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, Liuzhou, Chongqing and Urumqi. Meanwhile overseas, it successfully established complete vehicle production bases in Thailand, Indonesia and India.
Fujian Province is known for its beautiful scenery and since ancient times has been an important port and trade distribution center of China’s Maritime Silk Road. Located in the northeast coast of Fujian Province, Ningde City has a world-class natural deep-water port Sandu Gulf. Furthermore, as a global leader in power batteries, Ningde’s local leading enterprise CATL has abundant capacity supporting resources for new energy battery.
You will see S-A listed after MG HS around the world as this is the worldwide MODEL IDENTIFICATION for the MG HS as a whole.
It is an AS23 model ID that is often written as S-AS23 or SAS23. In Australia when a dealer lists a used MG HS for sale, they will sometimes list it as SERIES SAS23 MY22 (an MG HS from model year 2022). In the UK S-A will also feature on your V5C ownership document next to MODEL.
Confusingly the HS is also known as the SA-5 and so when you check your paint code on the sticker on the driver’s door lower pillar it will always begin PAINT 5 for the HS, and then RSJ for Dynamic red Tri-coat/JAY for Holborn blue and so on.
The petrol variants of the MG HS in the UK are Model type MAS23 which is often shown as AS23 and variant 1AB1PA version MD5RIP. The type approval number is:
E11*2007/46*4633*04 (On the black sticker on the drivers door pillar this is shown minus the last ’04’. The MG HS is a class M1 vehicle.
An MG HS PHEV PLUG IN HYBRID Type approval number would be:
All MG HS models leaving China are fitted with RIFD tracking chips prior to being loaded onto RoRo (Roll on Roll off cargo ships), small stickers that are placed inside the front windscreen usually and are a bit of a swine to remove. UK dealerships do not use these, but can see on the SAIC MG SAS (ordering) system when a car is “at sea” or “awaiting transport” or “in manufacturing country”.
There are also Certificates of Conformity with each car to show the model details, shipping details and specs but these are not routinely handed to owners (I have a separate post on these on this site)
It is not uncommon that the first that a dealer knows of actual delivery is when they have notification from the transport company. The stickers are often still inside the cars when the customers collects them, and these have been confirmed by owners in the UK and in Pakistan.
I have put together as much information as I can on the specifications and prices of the UK petrol versions of the MG HS since September 2019 to the present day, and hope that it is useful in the future to fellow owners. I will update the details along the way with any information that I find.
OWNERS MANUAL AND FOLDER
In the UK with every new purchase comes with an owner’s pack. This consists of a faux leather black folder with a black and chrome octagon badge on the front and press stud closing. Inside is a main compartment for the enclosed booklets, a pen holder, inner space for documents and two compartments for the enclosed MG assistance CARD and a dealership sales executive contact card.
The enclosed owner’s manual will be either the original September 2019 first edition which is 339 pages ending with TECHNICAL DATA, or the November 2021 Second edition of 350 pages ending with an APPENDIX section for the removable towbar. My December 2021 MG HS has the second edition version.
There is also a fold out QUICK START GUIDE which will either be the original September 2019 version or the reprinted October 2021 version. I have the second edition version.
There is also a NAVIGATION booklet of 34 pages which is the original first edition: VERSION 1.0 2020.
The second edition full digital dash in the petrol variants which was announced in June 2021, has never appeared in any UK nor worldwide owners manuals or quick start guides.
ENGINE CONFIGURATION AND HISTORY
The engine can trace it’s roots back to the GM Small Gasoline Engine (SGE), a family of small displacement three and four cylinder engine developed jointly with ADAM OPEL AG/SHANGHAI AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY CORPORATION (SAIC)/MG MOTOR (MG)/SHANGHAI GM (SGM) & the PAN ASIA TECHNICAL AUTOMOTIVE CENTER (PATAC).
The engines were designed to improve fuel economy, performance and emissions output, reduce noise and vibrations by means of gasoline direct injection, turbocharging, variable length intake manifolds and alternative fuel compatibility.
The engine is made from just two engine blocks and a modularity system where interchangeability between components is made easier. All variants of GM’s SGE engine feature the same 2.91-inch (74mm) bore, and 3.19-inch (81mm) bore spacing. The direct injection fuel rails are mounted with bushings onto the cylinder head and valve cover.
This helps to reduce the vibrations ticking sounds from the fuel injectors. To further reduce noise levels, a bed-plate engine block is used to increase overall rigidity. There is also a strengthened aluminium front cam cover. The engine is a wet sump, water cooled sequential multi port FI Direct Injection unit.
The MG HS, just like ALL turbocharged SGE engines, features a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries one-stage, single-scroll turbo. This is capable of spooling up very rapidly, with around 90% of peak torque arriving between 1,500 to 5,000RPM, peaking within the 5,600 to 6,000RPM range. The turbo is also installed close to the cylinders, in order to produce rapid torque and throttle response.
The GM 1.5 Turbo Inline-4 Engine, known as the LFV and manufactured from 2016, is used in the MG HS, with a lower 10.1:1 compression ratio and a 6,500rpm redline and Automatic stop-start compatibility, compared to the L3A variant used in other vehicles (MG5). This engine has also been used in other vehicles including:
Chevy Malibu (2016-Present
Buick LaCrosse (2016-Present
Buick Envision (2016-Present)
MG 5 LE (2020-Present)
MG 6 Pro (2021-Present)
***GM’s 2018 LYX engine is an update from the HS’s LFV engine and features the same direct injection, cast aluminium, DOHC design and similar compression ratio at 10.0:1.
The engine is almost entirely made of aluminium to reduce mass, and features a composite intake manifold. The engine first made it’s debut in 2014 in the Opel Adam (Vauxhall Adam in the UK), and the same year in the MG GT & MG GS, followed in 2017 in the MG 6 and 2018 in the MG HS and MG ZS.
ENGINE OUTPUT AND CLAIMS
The MG HS uses a 1.5T-GDI turbo charged gasoline direct injection engine with a displacement of 1490cc. It has four cylinders and 16 valves with a bore of 74mm and stroke of 86.6mm and an 11.5:1 compression ratio. Maximum power output is 162 PS (119kw) @5500rpm and it produces 184ibs ft of torque (250 NM) @ 1,500-4,400rpm.
The engine has a claimed 0-60mph speed of 9.6 seconds and 0-62mph of 9.9 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 118mph (190kph). I have seen countless videos where the HS has easily beaten these figures. The engine when seen as a complete unit for assembly has several identification numbers, the main one typically being:
SAIC MOTOR *15E4E*8BGL1140295 white on black print with a barcode. This is also stamped onto the aluminium casting. There is a blue sticker with black print:
101258GL1140295 and another plaque with die cut lettering stamped: R0401596 over 19112386
INFOTAINMENT SCREEN ENGINEER MODE
In the infotainment system you can activate what is a secret ENGINEER MODE screen and settings which are used at the factory to set up the vehicle and by your dealership in the event of troubleshooting problems.
****Please note that this is not intended for an owner to access under any circumstances, and you should not go into this system or play with the settings as much of it is in Chinese language, and you could seriously damage your car by adjusting settings from those originally set. I am only making people aware of the functions, but please DO NOT ACCESS OR USE THEM. LEAVE THAT TO TRAINED ENGINEERS
On the infotainment screen, tap on Settings and then SYSTEM. On the page now on the blacker inner part with the menu down the left side, tap on all four corners of the black screen quite quickly. Left top/right top, right bottom, left bottom.
A blank screen will then load and after five seconds the ENGINEER MODE appears on the screen with twelve individual categories to check. In Version the screen will display your country and the current software upload dates for things like the radio, Apps version, update date for the OS navigation etc.
Generally original vehicles will have September 2020 dates for all of the software. Other categories on the main screen include a SCREEN TEST to test the colours on the system. INIT is initialize and that is for resetting the factory settings. BACKLIGHT is to test the backlight on the screen for engineers on set up. BLUETOOTH tests Bluetooth features and signal strength. SCREEN ADJUST for the engineer to use. GPS TEST which shows how many satellites are found and in use. BUTTONS TEST let’s the engineer test all piano keys and buttons are fully functioning. RVC TEST is for the reverse camera and you can manually use sliders to alter the brightness/contrast/saturation and hue if the picture is not to your liking.
USB TEST is to check the USB ports are working. BURN TEST is a screen burn test which refers to when something like a map has been on the screen for hours it can burn itself into the screen. REBOOT LOG is mainly in Chinese and tells you the log of the things you have done.
You can now enter the CANBUS area of the Engineer Mode. Tap the E of Engineer on the button left five times or so and several new boxes will come up on the screen and join the current categories. SET MARK/TRACE SWITCH then CAN INFO which contains seven pages in Chinese. Again, please DO NOT access this system as there is no need to do so and you can damage the system completely through a lack of knowledge.
**You can also ENABLE VIDEO AND FILM PLAYING WHILST DRIVING and disable completely the FORWARD COLLISION SYSTEM
THE ORIGINAL AND UPDATED DASH
The original dash has come to be known as the ANALOGUE DASH and features in all User’s Manuals online and in physical form around the world. The twin analogue dials with part digital centre ran from first release in China on the domestic market back in 2018 and first release in the UK in September 2019 right up until June 2021.
In June 2021 the new FULL DIGITAL DASH as it has come to be known was announced to MG dealers and with paints and major updates there is a three month roll out meaning that the first full digital dash units began shipping around September 2021.
***(I have a separate post on the FULL DIGITAL DASH and how to use it on this site.
THE DCT DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION (OPTION)
The MG HS DCT 250 transmission is made in China by SAIC MOTOR in conjunction with Bosch and BorgWarner with a product number of 109399289 and a typical barcode number of: 129289ALB120161 201112 and is a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) with 7-speeds, a dry clutch capable of handling up to 250Nm of torque. It was developed in conjunction with SAIC General Motors (SGM) and Shanghai Automobile Gear Works (SAGW).
For the 2.0T 2 Litre AWD version of the MG HS, a DCT 360 wet clutch is used as that is capable of handling in excess of 250Nm of torque and better dissipates heat.
DCT clutches are known as wet or dry, and although the 1.5T HS clutch is dry, 2.45 Litres of Dexron DCT fluid oil is replaced every three years at service or 45,000 miles (or every 4 years if you do 10,000 or less each year) as a means to protect gear, synchronizers and bearings, while also used to operate the transmission’s shift mechanisms.
DCT means dual-clutch transmission also known as a twin-clutch transmission and are computer controlled devices using two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets. Think of it as two separate manual transmissions with their respective clutches contained within one housing, and working as one unit effectively as an Automatic gearbox.
DCT’s use clutch packs like a standard manual gearbox whereas traditional Automatics use torque converters (a fluid coupling transferring rotating power from an internal combustion engine, to a rotating driven load). DCT’s are often seen as more economical to use than traditional automatics due to the seamless computer controlled shifts. ***(I have a two part piece on the MG HS DCT on this site)
THE MG HS FRONT CAMERA AND RADAR SYSTEM
The MG HS has a Bosch mono front-view camera fitted to the windscreen with a 50 degree field of view and a Bosch Millimetre Electromagnetic radar fitted at the centre of the bottom of the front bumper with a 90 degree field of vision and a 150 metre range. Millimeter-wave radar refers to a radar operating in the millimeter-wave band.
Generally, the millimeter wave refers to an electromagnetic wave in the frequency domain of 30–300 GHz (wavelength of 1–10 mm) In the MG HS it is a Short-Range Radar (SRR) fitted with Long Range Radar (LRR) covering a range of more than 200 metres.
The radar comes embedded with ‘Object relative distance and velocity detection’ and uses the Doppler algorithm which, named after Austrian physicist Christian Lawrance Doppler, who tried to make sense of measuring data from a moving source as early as 1842.
SAIC MG claim a team of engineers from MG headquarters and Bosch in Melbourne, Australia test drove the MG Pilot system in excess of two hundred hours in early 2019 prior to it’s Australian and New Zealand release. The MG Pilot system in the HS was then calibrated accordingly to the findings in those tests.
The MG HS Hybrid vehicle body uses high-strength steel and hot-rolled steel to ensure the strength and safety of the car.
The interior 64-colour ambient lights on the Exclusive DCT variant are called “Aurora ambient lights” and the front grille design is called the STELLAR FIELD GRILLE or STARDUST GRILLE.
LOCATION AND REPLACEMENT OF THE CABIN FILTER
The cabin filter blocks out harmful dust and particles from entering the vehicle and needs to be replaced at regular intervals to ensure clean and efficient air filtration. This is not a job I will be doing myself though it is easily handled by a competent mechanic.
You must open the passenger side glovebox and release the round plastic securing pin on the ride side. Then release the guide line with a screwdriver and gently prise the glovebox lid outwards into the cabin. The filter box is now visible inside the rear of the glovebox at the top and secured by three plastic lugs which must be pushed upwards to release the black plastic cover.
Now pull out the white/cream cabin filter (it should be marked with an UP on the left to enable correct fitting. Refit the new filter and carefully reposition the black cover (not easy). Refit the guideline and push the glovebox cover into position, securing with the round pin.
A car engine has a certain range of speeds within it works and without gears we could only move at the speed of that engine. Gears are made from different sized cogs to provide different ratios, and this is achieved by input gears from the engine side and output gears connected to the wheels. First gear has a smaller input gear that output connecting gear and this provide the highest ratio so that the engine has to rotate many more times than the road wheels to provide the highest amount of torque and power to help us overcome the difficulty of pulling away.
Conversely, seventh gear requires less torque or power as the vehicle has already built up it’s momentum when this gear is engaged. The input gear to the engine is much larger than the output gear to the wheels and this gives the lowest gear ratio.
Gear ratios are formulated by dividing the number of teeth on the input gear (cog) by the number of teeth on the output gear. For the MG HS First gear is 4.407 which means the engine makes four revolutions for every single revolution of the output gear. A lower or taller gear ratio will give a higher top speed, and a higher or shorter gear ratio will give faster acceleration.
Drag coefficiency remains at 0.36 (Cw-Wert)
MG HS GEAR RATIOS
Reverse gear ratio: 3.882
Final drive ratio: Gears 1/2/6/7 4.56 and Gears 3/4/5/Reverse 5.21 on 3rd-5th gears

GLASS MANUFACTURE AND DETAILS
From what I can decipher from the front and rear side window glass on my MG HS is the glass is made by FUYAO GROUP SHANGHAI CO., LTD. SHANGHAI CHINA and is certified as AS2 tempered glass with a minimum of 70% transparency. It is therefore tinted because AS1 is the clearest, untinted glass as specified for the automotive applications.
The glass was approved in the Netherlands for road use in Europe on European member licensed automobiles by the Economic Committee of Europe (ECE) and has Conformity with the Chinese standard of safety.
The "E" means that the glass has been approved for road use in Europe on European member licensed automobiles by the Economic Committee of Europe (ECE). The number next to the "E" indicates the country which approved the item. On Emmy it is E4 which means the glass was approved in the Netherlands.
AS1 is the clearest glass with no tinting and this is used on the laminated windscreen on the MG HS.
The side windows are designated as AS2: all tempered and tinted glass with a minimum of 70% transparency, except windscreens;
Conformity with the European standard of safety ECE R43.The set of numbers that follows, “000499”, is the approval number assigned to the part.
M is a model number of the glass
Conformity with the Chinese standard of safety CCC E000199/E000039.
THE SEVENTEEN TYPES OF OFFICIAL SAIC MG WHEELS FOUND ON THE MG HS AROUND THE WORLD
There are, up to May 22 about 17 different types of alloy wheel on worldwide variants, these include the prototype, 17 inch and 18 inch alloys, Phev only versions and those on the facelift variants and track edition special, but here we concentrate just on the originals ones.
There are many different officially produced SAIC MG alloy wheels since September 2018 for the MG HS which have featured in different markets around the world. A seventeen inch alloy used on base model variants is accompanied by two main eighteen inch alloy styles used in different countries and one newer style eighteen inch wheel only found in Thailand on the MG HS PHEV. There is another 17 inch alloy that I am still looking into at present and cannot confirm it’s authenticity.
The original massive alloy wheels featured on the X-Motion concept car in May 2018 at the Beijing Auto Show which was held at the New China International Exhibition Center (New Venue), located near the Beijing Capital International Airport, and the Old China International Exhibition Center (Old Venue), located in the center of the city. The New Venue was comprised of exhibitions for finished vehicle automakers and major components suppliers, while the Old Venue showcased components and selected models from the NEV (New Energy Vehicle) automakers.
The concept alloy wheels were officially called ‘HURRICANE ALUMINIUM’ and were twenty inches in diameter. They never made it to final production.
SEVENTEEN INCH ALLOYS
In the UK the 17 inch wheels are 6.5j x 17 rims and tyres sizes 215/60 R17 rated as 96H whilst 18 inch alloys are 7.5j x 18 on 235/50 R18 rated at 97W. Tyre pressures as listed in the First edition of the UK owners handbook (September 2019) are: Front 250kPa/2.5 bar/37 psi and Rear 210 kPa/2.1 bar/31 psi.
The 17 inch alloys were only used on the UK entry level MG HS EXPLORE model and in all my research I have never come across a name for these wheels.
Elsewhere in the world the 17 inch alloys are used extensively including in Australia on the lower spec MG HS CORE model from $29,990 and VIBE model from $30,990 and in New Zealand on the lowest spec VIBE model at $33,990.
The MG HS VIBE in Fiji in September 2019 featured 17 inch alloys, as did the September 2019 base model ‘C’ variant in Thailand which cost 919,000 tbh (£20,583).The MG HS Sport+ base model used 17 inch alloys in 2020.
The MG HS STD 1.5T MT in the Ukraine is listed in January 2022 with 17inch alloys and priced at 578,386 uah. In January 2022 in Trinidad and Tobago the MG HS 1.5LT 7AT CORE features the 17 inch alloys and costs $229,000. The MG eHS PLUG IN HYBRID sold through the European arm of SAIC MG also offers the 17 inch alloys on the current base model, the MG HS COMFORT.
EIGHTEEN INCH ALLOYS ON FIRST UK PRESS AND TEST VEHICLES
There were also two types of 18” alloy wheels on press cars and early variants. The first UK demonstrator cars in September 2019 featured Paddington Brown (DSK 10743412) paint and the early styled 18 inch alloys and these were also shown in China and New Zealand previously in May 2019. Some of the wheels appear to be brighter, as if more chrome in colour and have straight spokes through the centre of each pair of outer spokes.
These wheels were seen on press cars tested by AUTOCAR/COMPANY CAR and AUTO EXPRESS as well as some online video reviews and could be found on showroom demonstrators which were later re-registered and sold on to customers. Again, I have never unearthed an official name for the early wheels.
The original early MG HS wheels are not rare or limited edition and in fact were also used in MG HS models for the middle east Markets and still appeared on the October 2021 website in movie advertisements for the left hand drive red MG HS with the 2.0Litre engine and All wheel drive. Also the older wheels are shown on the current movie adverts (October 2021) for the MG Pakistan RHD models with 1.5 engine. They also appear in photographs for Jordan MG HS models. They are also seen as top spec alloys on Mexican 2 Litre Trophy models in September 2021.
EIGHTEEN INCH ‘HURRICANE’ ALLOYS
In the UK the earliest wheels were quickly replaced by ‘Hurricane’ 18 inch alloy wheels which were originally listed in the UK brochures Version 1 October 2019 as an upgraded ‘Diamond cut’ version for the Exclusive models which suggested that those on the Excite models were standard alloys. This was however incorrect and all Hurricane alloys have always been diamond cut.
WHAT ARE DIAMOND CUT ALLOY WHEELS?
Diamond cut alloy wheels are placed on a lathe and a part or all of the surface is machined off to leave a shiny alloy surface onto which a layer of lacquer is applied and are seen as superior to traditional powder coated or wet spray tech wheels.
One nice design feature with Hurricanes is the ease with which they can be cleaned, the spokes taking just minutes to wipe down and the huge spaces between the spokes which allows even my banana like hands easy access to clean the entire inner rims of the alloys, preventing them from turning black with dirt and age and giving a new appearance at all times.
EIGHTEEN INCH ALLOYS ON THE PHEV IN THAILAND ONLY
The third official alloy wheel released by SAIC MG appeared on October 28th 2020 with the release of the MG HS PHEV in Thailand. This alloy appeared in press shots for journalists and test cars and is seen on the white PHEV photos below. It is a very elegant wheel with large gaps between the main spokes to give a dynamic look. These are 18 inch alloys on 235/50R18 rims.
In many markets of the world, especially the Middle East, there is a huge love for after market alloys on the MG HS, some which look fantastic, others which are an acquired taste, and that is for another post
***I have a separate post on all of the other variants of alloys on this site

SEAT CONSTRUCTION AND LEATHER
MG quote that 85% of the cabin is real leather on higher spec models. The seats in all variants of the MG HS are manufactured by Johnson Controls Automotive Experience, who later became Adient. Any colour other than Arctic white at this point cost £550 extra.
GEARBOX CHOICES & WARRANTY
All models came with the MG 7 year Manufacturer’s warranty of 7 years or up to 80,000 miles, whichever came first. The gearbox choices were a 6 speed manual and a 7 speed DCT (Dual clutch transmission) option. A dual-clutch or Twin-clutch transmission (DCT) is a type of multi-speed transmission system which uses two separate clutches for odd and even gear sets.
The design is often similar to two separate manual transmissions with their respective clutches contained within one housing and the DCT functions as an automatic transmission, requiring no driver input to change gears.
The above details all featured in the first edition of the MG HS brochure printed in October 2019. By the second edition of the MG HS brochures in the UK printed in June 2020, the HS had received a 5 star top safety rating from EURO NCAP (The tests video and documentation for the 5 star award were published in December 2019) and this was added to the brochure. The base model EXPLORE model had been dropped from the range and was no longer shown in the brochures though old stock was naturally still available in MG showrooms.
The 17” wheels had gone from the range and now both EXCITE and EXPLORE models came with 18” diamond cut Hurricane alloy wheels 235/50 R18.
For the Third edition MG HS brochures in October 2020, the MG HS PLUG IN EXCITE & EXCLUSIVE models were listed for the first time. The paint schemes changed also and became variant specific for the first time:
ARCTIC WHITE (WSD) (Standard free paint on Petrol only)
BRIXTON BLUE METALLIC (JSM) (Petrol only)
PEARL BLACK METALLIC (PBC)
WHITE PEARL METALLIC (WSD) (MG listed this as ‘standard’ free paint on the Plug in only version BUT a Metallic cost option on Petrol models)
FARRINGDON RED METALLIC (RSL)
PIMLICO BLUE Metallic (GCY 10790100) (A new colour for the Plug in only)
There were no additions or alterations for the Edition four brochure of December 2020, nor the 5th Edition of the brochure printed in February 2021.
In the June 2021 6th edition of the MG HS brochure, for both the EXCITE & EXCLUSIVE trims the FARRINGDON RED METALLIC (RSL) paint had been dropped and replaced by DYNAMIC RED TRI-COAT (RSJ 10208618) which was now the most expensive paint option at £695 (£579.17 plus £115.83 VAT).
Dynamic red Tri-coat began to appear on post September 2021 models that arrived in the UK. By November 2021 the UK also had the new full digital dash which had been a feature in overseas markets for a considerable time period.
Brixton Blue (JSM) was now replaced by the new HOLBORN BLUE (JAY). Initially MG UK displayed the new colour as a ‘metallic’, but after the November 2021 website revamp, this was altered.
There were major problems with this colour and customers who ordered were told to expect long delays or choose a second colour choice or change their orders completely. News broke from MG dealerships that Sales Executives were finally allowed to order Holborn Blue from Thursday 3rd February 2022 on the system with deliveries expected to begin arriving from July 2022. ARCTIC WHITE (WSB)& HOLBORN BLUE (JAY) were now standard free paint colours whilst BLACK PEARL (PBC) & WHITE PEARL METALLIC (WSD) paints now cost £545 including VAT as an option. The DCT automatic gearbox was now £1,500 including VAT.

FOLLOWING THE NOVEMBER 2021 COMPLETE OVERHAUL OF THE MG WEBSITE:
Sadly the website overhaul was a big let down and erased many very useful site features including service schedule, how to’s, videos and useful posts for prospective owners. Gone too were almost all of the genuine accessories, with dealerships now saying they had been deleted from the range.
Only a handful of accessories were now listed:
10743399 HS MANUAL FABRIC FLOOR MATS & 10798769 HS DCT FABRIC FLOOR MATS remained the same price at £69
10743404 RUBBER FLOOR MATS MANUAL remained the same at £72.50
10340567 16-inch SPACE SAVER SPARE WHEEL remained the same at £259.00
These remained the only listed accessories on the MG UK website.
